/Parque da Juventude

Parque da Juventude is the result of a long process that began in 1999 with a competition for projects to transform the Carandiru Complex (the largest penitentiary complex in Latin America, overcrowded and the scene of numerous tragedies), into a public space for the community. with the creation of a large park, with institutional buildings and leisure facilities.
The proposal by aflalo/gasperini, winner of that competition, included the remodeling of two existing sets of buildings at the ends of the plot, connected by a park with different moments, one consisting of courts and sports equipment and the other aimed at passive leisure and contemplation .
The original buildings that were not demolished were transformed into technical schools and a new horizontal building received the São Paulo Library, a pilot project for new state libraries. The proposal sought to take advantage of the
Carandiru subway station, next to the complex, as it provides a unique condition for an urban facility of this size.
The result is a set that has a great impact on transforming the surroundings and equipment that has been appropriated by the community on a metropolitan scale.
